Infectious haematopoietic necrosis (IHN) was diagnosed at 5 fish establishments in Finland, Åland Islands in 2021. First infection was confirmed on the 27th of May 2021 and the fifth on the 22nd of October 2021. The infection came from Danish fish farms, where from rainbow trout were shipped for further growing in the Åland Islands spring 2021. The Finnish Food Authority set up a restricted zone around the infected sites and an eradication program was carried out. All rainbow trout from the infected establishments were euthanized or slaughtered and the establishments were washed, disinfected and fallowed to eradicate the infection. Production in the zone started again in spring 2022 and a two-year surveillance program was carried out to restore the IHN-free status. The compartment was declared free on March 12th 2024 and all the restrictions were cancelled.
Another IHN eradication program still continues in the western Åland.
