Novel food applications are submitted to the European Commission
Applications for novel food are sent to the European Commission in electronic form via the electronic submission system found on the Commission's website. The Commission shall verify the validity of the applications and then send them, if necessary, to EFSA for safety evaluation. Summaries of valid novel food applications sent to the Commission can be found on the Commission website.
EFSA assesses the safety of the novel food
The Food Safety Authority EFSA shall verify the validity of information on applications sent to it and, where appropriate, request further information from the applicant. EFSA then assesses the safety of the novel food on the basis of the information provided in the application. EFSA publishes completed safety assessments on its website (at the bottom of the page).
