As of 20 July 2016, foods marketed for sportspeople are classified based on their content, formulation and purpose of use as
- fortified foods (e.g. sports nutrition powders, bars, drinks fortified with vitamins and minerals)
- food supplements (e.g. tablets, capsules, powders consumed in small unit quantities)
regular foods
The manufacturer or the importer of the food shall verify that their product meets the requirements laid down in legislation.
- Labelling shall comply with the Food Information Regulation.
- Only authorised nutrition and health claims referred to in Claim Regulations may be used in marketing.
- If vitamins or minerals are added in the product, the requirements of the Fortification Regulation shall be complied with.
- In some cases, the Food Supplement Regulation may be applicable to the products.
