What are genetically modified products?
Genetically modified (GM) refers to an organism, e.g. a plant or a bacterium, whose genome has been genetically modified. The acronym GMO (genetically modified organism) refers to a living and reproductive organism, including seeds. Genetically modified products and ingredients of genetically modified products either contain or are made from genetically modified ingredients.
What does the Finnish Food Authority control?
At the Finnish Food Authority, the control of genetically modified products includes the control of genetically modified seeds, feed, food, plants, cut flowers (carnation), and GMO field experiments.
The Finnish Food Authority also acts as the national contact point for the approval procedure under EU Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 for genetically modified feed and food as well as genetically modified species accepted for cultivation.
