Ungulates

The animal health conditions for the entry of ungulates into the Union are stipulated in Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/692

You can find the permitted countries of origin for ungulates in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/404, Annex II

The ungulates referred to here are listed in Annex III of Regulation (EU) 2016/429 of the European Parliament and of the Council

Conditions common to all ungulates

Consignments of ungulates are allowed to enter the Union only if they have been sent from the original holding to the Union without passing through any other holding. They must also have an EU model health certificate for the animal in question in accordance with Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/403.

Identification of ungulates

Consignments of ungulates other than equidae are allowed to enter the Union only if the animals in the consignment are individually marked before they are dispatched from the place of origin with a physical identifier that is permanently visible and easily legible

a)the animal's identification code, which creates an unambiguous connection between the animal and the accompanying animal health certificate;

b)the exporting country code according to ISO standard 3166 in the form of a two-letter code.

Consignments of equidae are only allowed to enter the Union if the animals in the consignment are individually marked before they are dispatched from the original holding by at least one of the following methods:

a)injectable transponder or ear tag with permanently visible and easily readable

(i) the animal's identification code, which creates an unambiguous connection between the animal and the accompanying animal health certificate;

(ii) Two-letter or three-digit country code of the exporting country according to ISO standard 3166;

b)in the case of equidae other than those intended for slaughter, an identification document issued at the latest at the time of issuing the certificate for entry into the Union and

(i) where the animal is described, including alternative methods of identification, in order to establish an unambiguous link between the animal and the accompanying identification document;

(ii) which contains the information about the unique code displayed by the transponder to be injected, if that code does not comply with the specifications presented in subsection a.

If the ungulates are marked with an electronic identifier that does not comply with ISO standards 11784 and 11785, the operator responsible for the entry of consignments of ungulates into the Union must provide a reading device that allows the identification of the animal to be verified at any time.

Post-import isolation

With the exception of equidae arriving in the Union for competitions, races and equine culture events, ungulates must be kept in the holding of their destination after their arrival in the Union for at least 30 days after their arrival.
