An import permit is always required for importing a dead animal. Link to instructions in margin (to be completed as appropriate, although the instructions were not designed for this specific purpose).
The animal must be packed securely and safely in accordance with Evira’s instructions as given in the section "packing in practice" and also "Whole animals and animal parts". Also check with the shipper (airline etc.) what type of box the animal must travel in.
If a postmortem examination is to be carried out, the referral documents required can be found in the margin. The referral used is that for exercising animals.
The risk of infection must be borne in mind when the animal is being transported. The greatest risk with pets is that saliva or other secretions may come into contact with damaged human or animal skin or mucous membranes. Therefore it is important to make sure that the packaging remains intact throughout the journey and does not leak.
Veterinary border inspection
A chargeable veterinary border inspection must always be carried out. It is not necessary to submit an electronic TRACES notification, but a pre-notification must be sent by sending the precompleted scanned first page of the CVED to the border inspection post at least one working day before importation. Use the link on the right to find the model of the CVED: select the latest amendment or latest consolidated version of Commission Regulation 136/2004. Use the upper bar to select the language.
