The purpose of the project was to evaluate if the Finnish control program for classical scrapie has been sufficient to show that the prevalence of classical scrapie during each of the years 2006 - 2012 has been less than 0,1 per cent with a confidence of 95 per cent (OIE´s definition of negligible risk).
For this purpose, the scrapie control program and its realization in the Finnish sheep and goat population was described. The focus of the evaluation was on the surveillance of dead and culled sheep and goats (fallen stock). The conclusion was that the control program for classical scrapie has been sufficient to prove negligible risk. The report constitutes a part of Finland’s application to the European Commission for negligible risk status regarding classical scrapie.
