Development of cattle disease surveillance programmes and their risk-based approach

In Finland, the surveillance of the disease situation of multiple cattle diseases is statutory. In the project on cattle disease surveillance programmes, the risk-based nature of monitoring is developed, taking into account the requirements of the reformed Animal Health Law. Bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) and bluetongue (BT) are used as model diseases.

The project explores the coverage of surveillance programmes in different regions and for different parts of the production sector and animal groups. Possible sections outside surveillance will be recognised.

The final results will be published in a report which will highlight tangible proposals for options for cattle monitoring programmes for the next few years.
